Courage or Collaboration?

Overview of Lecture Series

The COVID epidemic has focused our attention on the relationship between the individual and the community. It has highlighted the problem of dealing with those who choose to follow their own interests despite endangering the lives of others.

This scenario was played out in more dramatic fashion in Occupied Paris of the 1940s when some risked torture and death to uphold ideals while others enriched themselves at others’ cost.

This series will examine the careers of women on both sides of the divide. What is even more interesting is how those who thrived in the cesspool of Vichy and Nazi France are remembered today.

No one is really interested in hearing the unsavoury back stories of Edith Piaf, Arletty or Coco Chanel. They are now iconic Parisians. By contrast, there is a small plaque commemorating the Resistance heroine, Rose Valland, on the wall of the Jeu de Paume. What does this mean about collective memory?
